Life at Rutgers
As a postdoc at Rutgers, navigating the complexities of a vast institution can be challenging, but we're here to guide you. Connect with the right people, build a supportive community, and explore resources designed to enrich your experience. Our office serves as your compass through academic policies, procedures, and postdoctoral career support offices. Connect and explore the wealth of resources that await you.
All postdocs should feel free to contact our office—at any time—about anything. We are here to help you, and if we can't, we will connect you with someone who can.
In addition to our office, most postdocs can contact their department administrator directly for help with administrative issues. For guidance needed beyond the department level, but within your school, below are your school-level contacts.
As a postdoctoral researcher at Rutgers University, understanding your HR employee classification is essential for determining the benefits you are eligible for. Whether you are a current postdoc, an incoming one, or considering Rutgers for your postdoctoral training, familiarizing yourself with the different classifications and associated policies is crucial.
The Rutgers PDA is dedicated to building a postdoc community at Rutgers, and they host a variety of formal, informal, and virtual events throughout the year, including professional development luncheons, academic symposia, happy hours, and trips around New Jersey.
Rutgers University is home to a vibrant community of postdoctoral researchers from all over the world. In fact, nearly 40% of all Rutgers postdocs are foreign nationals. Visit our Information for International Postdocs webpag
Rutgers AAUP-AFT has represented hundreds of postdoctoral associates since 2011. Postdocs are part of the same union with full-time faculty, graduate workers, and EOF counselors, but they have their own separate contract. The union’s unity across ranks has produced greater advocacy on issues facing postdocs, such as workload protections, fair compensation, and employment support.
