Evaluation of Teaching Working Group

Teaching is fundamental to the University’s mission, and evaluation of teaching with evidence that fully represents a candidate’s teaching practice is fundamental for promotion and tenure.  In July 2021, the Evaluation of Teaching Working Group was convened to consider those best practices for evaluation of teaching used at Rutgers and among Rutgers’ peers and aspirants.

Building on the work of the 2018 University Task Force Report, the Working Group created the Guidelines for the Evaluation of Teaching to support departments and schools as they develop and implement plans that allow for multiple methods of evaluation and forms of evidence that capture the effectiveness of the different instructional formats engaged by our faculty.

An additional fundamental outcome of this work was to recommend revisions to the 2022-2023 Promotion and Tenure Instructions, which state that candidates are required to provide evidence of effective teaching and mentoring, including quantitative data from the Student Instructional Rating Survey (SIRS) and one or more additional pieces of evidence (e.g., peer review, mentoring, scholarship of learning, statement of teaching philosophy, and/or a teaching portfolio).
