Rutgers Leadership Academy: Call for Nominations

March 1, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that nominations are open for faculty and staff participation in the fifth cohort of the Rutgers Leadership Academy (RLA).

Offered by the Rutgers Center for Organizational Leadership, and supported by the Office of University Strategy and Office of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the RLA is a one-year academic leadership certificate program designed for mid-career faculty and staff with an interest in learning more about the core concepts, competencies, and tools associated with leadership in higher education.

The program is designed for individuals from across Rutgers who have a minimum of seven years of professional experience. Through participation in this collaborative learning program, RLA Fellows develop a deeper understanding of the challenges confronting higher education, foster engagement with university strategy, enhance their leadership competencies, and strengthen their network of colleagues from across Rutgers who demonstrate a shared interest in leadership development.

The program consists of approximately 15 virtual and in-person sessions on Wednesday evenings throughout the academic year from 4:00 to 6:30 pm. Pending COVID-19 restrictions, all in-person sessions will be held in New Brunswick. A list of topics to be addressed in the program can be found here.

Working with peers and accomplished leaders from Rutgers and other institutions to improve aspects of the university is a central component of the RLA experience. As a part of the program, participants assume a leadership role in developing a project proposal that aligns with the Rutgers value propositions—the relentless pursuit of academic excellence; the need to develop strategic institutional clarity; and the achievement of a beloved community—and advances their unit or the campus/university as a whole. Upon completion of the program, alumni have future opportunities for networking, participation, and professional development in the Rutgers Center for Organizational Leadership Alumni Network.

Mid-career faculty and staff from New Brunswick, Newark, Camden, and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences are eligible to be nominated for participation in the program. Nominees should have the demonstrated potential for increased leadership responsibility and achievement within higher education. Click here for a complete list of RLA Fellows from the 2020-2021 cohort.

Nominations for participation in the RLA need to be submitted by vice presidents, deans, directors, chairs, or other senior leaders who see the value in creating an expanded cadre of skilled leaders within their unit and the university. Nominators will agree to serve a facilitating and mentoring role throughout the program and will help to identify projects through which RLA Fellows can exercise a leadership role. Self-nominations are not permitted.

The nominee must submit their application and supporting materials by April 2. Decisions will be announced in April 2021.
