Samantha Alaimo
Potential Impacts of Offshore Wind Development on the Commercial Fishing Industry
Advisor: Dr. Travis Miles
Sam is a Ph.D. student in Oceanography in the Department of Marine and Coastal Studies. She graduated with a B.S. in Marine Biology (and a math minor) from the University of New Haven in 2021. Her research there was focused on the spatial distributions and habitats of four flatfish species in the Long Island Sound and the characteristic polynomials of symmetric matrices. She also studied sustainable fisheries at the Shoals Marine Laboratory on Appledore Island, ME. Broadly, she is interested in how the physical features of the ocean affect commercially important fish populations. More specifically, she is interested in how offshore wind development off the coast of NJ will affect fish populations. Her hope is that her research will be collaborative with both scientists and fishers to help inform management decisions surrounding commercially relevant species.
