Search for the Senior Vice President for Research

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks an accomplished leader to serve as its next Senior Vice President for Research (SVPR). The SVPR reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs (EVPAA) to provide leadership and strategic direction to define and advance the research mission of the University. The SVPR will be a member of the President’s cabinet and will interface regularly with the President, the administrative leadership, and the chancellors and academic and research leadership of the university, and actively work with the research community at the institution.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing and implementing a strategic vision for research that will make Rutgers University competitive with the corresponding aspirational peer schools, including those in the AAU and the Big Ten Academic Alliance; working with the EVPAA and other administrative leadership to realize the research vision and create policies consistent with the mission of Rutgers University; working strategically to help campuses and schools build their research programs by supporting investment in research infrastructure and support services and identifying funding opportunities; and developing relevant industry and professional partnerships to increase the research base and visibility of Rutgers University.

The successful candidate will have a compelling history of leading complex organizations with judgment and creativity, and a demonstrated ability to successfully motivate and direct diverse teams in a complex and changing environment. She/he will have an understanding of, and ability to provide leadership and guidance on innovation and entrepreneurship, animal care, core facilities, research integrity, and strategic initiatives that will position the university for growing success in research. The Office for Research will also be responsible for all aspects of research grant administration, including the development of large collaborative grant proposals; oversight and development of regulatory and compliance requirements; implementation of institutional policies; and efficient delivery of services and programs throughout the lifecycle of pre-award, post-award, and regulatory oversight that positively impact research activities, accountability, and compliance across the University.
