Dr. Philip Furmanski, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, is the chief academic and budget officer for the university.  The office is responsible for academic programs and policies across the university, including degree program development, faculty appointments and promotions, and academic program review.

The deans of the 17 degree-granting colleges and schools, as well as the directors of the centers and institutes, on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus report directly to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, who also works with the provosts of Rutgers–Camden and Rutgers–Newark on academic matters throughout the university.
